Picture this: you show up at the gate, hand over your boarding pass, and the agent says 'enjoy your Back Seat.' That is not a punchline. That is Lufthansa's actual new product - a premium tier that charges you more to sit further toward the tail of the plane.
We have a lot to get through today. Two time-sensitive card offers that genuinely deserve your attention before the weekend, a Southwest route so unusual it made me read the headline twice, and a buy points deal that expires tonight. Let's go.
🤓 Miles & Points Trivia
Southwest Airlines originally operated how many routes when it launched in 1971?
🛫 3 routes (Texas Triangle: Dallas, Houston, San Antonio)
🛫 7 routes across the Southwest US
🛫 12 routes including California
🛫 1 route (Dallas to Houston only)
The answer is waiting for you near the bottom of today's newsletter. Keep scrolling. 👇
✈️ Lufthansa Is Charging a Premium to Sit in the Back Row
The 'Back Seat' Concept in Plain English
Lufthansa has quietly unveiled a new economy seating concept that has the aviation world doing a collective double-take. Alongside a new 'First Row Seat' - which, fine, makes intuitive sense as a premium option - the carrier is introducing the 'Back Seat.' As in, you pay more to sit further from the front of the cabin.
The logic, apparently, is that the rear of the aircraft on certain Lufthansa widebodies offers more privacy, a different cabin feel, or some other differentiator that the airline believes travelers will pay to access. This is the same airline that built five different seating tiers into its Allegris business class cabin.
What It Means for Award Bookers
From a miles-and-points perspective, the more Lufthansa fragments its cabin, the more complex award redemptions become. If Lufthansa starts treating Back Seat as a distinct fare class - even within economy - that could affect how partner programs price saver awards on Lufthansa metal. Worth keeping an eye on as this rolls out.
For now, if you are planning a Lufthansa redemption, the Miles and More program remains the primary path. And if you are holding Amex points, the 30% transfer bonus to Virgin Atlantic (which partners with many of the same Star Alliance carriers for certain routes) runs through next Friday, July 31.
💳 Chase Sapphire Preferred 100K - This Is the Last Call
We covered the Chase Sapphire Preferred's big refresh a while back, and the 100,000-point welcome bonus that came with it has been one of the better entry-level offers on the market. But that offer is closing. If you have been sitting on the fence, today is the day to make a decision.
The card carries a $95 annual fee and earns Chase Ultimate Rewards points - one of the most flexible currencies in the game. Those 100K points transfer to United, Hyatt, Southwest, Virgin Atlantic, Singapore KrisFlyer, and a dozen others. At our valuation, 100K Chase points is worth somewhere between $1,500 and $2,000 in travel, depending on how you redeem.
The Chase Sapphire Preferred is still one of the strongest beginner cards in the market - and at 100K, the math is hard to argue with. Use our Chase Points Calculator to run the numbers for your situation before you apply.
One more thing worth knowing: the Chase Ultimate Rewards to IHG 100% transfer bonus ends this Thursday, July 30. If you want to double your points into IHG nights, the Sapphire Preferred is your launchpad.
🏨 Marriott Bonvoy Boundless: 125K Points, a Free Night, and $100 Back on Airfare
The Numbers Behind This Offer
The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless card - a $95 annual fee card from Chase - is currently sitting at one of its strongest-ever welcome offers: up to 125,000 Bonvoy points, a free night certificate worth up to 50,000 points, and up to $100 back on airline purchases. That is a lot of value packed into a sub-$100 annual fee card.
The 125,000 points alone can cover multiple nights at a Category 4 or 5 property. Add the free night certificate on top and you are looking at a potential 3-4 night stay at properties that regularly go for $250-$400 per night in cash.
The 'Ending Soon' Window
Chase has flagged this offer as ending soon - no hard cutoff date has been published, but that language typically means days, not weeks. If Marriott properties are part of your travel plans this year, this is worth acting on now rather than waiting.
Not sure which Marriott card is right for you? We built a tool for exactly that. And if you want to run the math on what 125,000 Bonvoy points are actually worth, our Marriott Points Calculator has you covered.
✈️ Southwest's New Route Breaks the Red-Eye Rulebook
A year and a half ago, Southwest didn't operate a single overnight flight. Now the airline is about to launch what might be the most unusual itinerary in US domestic aviation: a reverse red-eye.
A traditional red-eye flies west-to-east overnight, arriving in the morning. Southwest's new route flips that. You depart from the East Coast late at night and fly westbound - landing on the West Coast in the small hours of the morning. It is disorienting from a sleep perspective, but it opens up a new category of schedule flexibility for certain travelers.
Southwest has been aggressively expanding its network lately - 15 new routes announced just last week, adding service to Austin, Nashville, San Diego, and the Caribbean. If you are planning to redeem Rapid Rewards points on any of these new routes, Award Travel Finder is tracking award space across all Southwest markets in real time.
💡 The Baggage Insurance Mistake That Cost One Traveler Their Claim
A reader named Nicolas recently shared a lesson that is genuinely worth passing along. His wife's suitcase was damaged in transit on a recent trip. He filed a baggage insurance claim through his American Express card - and it was denied. The reason had nothing to do with the extent of the damage. It came down to a single detail on the baggage tag.
The specifics matter here: Amex's baggage insurance requires proof that the bag was checked with a common carrier. The baggage claim tag - the receipt the airline gives you at check-in - is a critical piece of documentation. Without it, or with one that doesn't match the cardholder's name or ticket, claims get denied.
The practical takeaway: keep your baggage claim tags attached to your boarding pass until you are 100% satisfied your luggage arrived undamaged. It costs nothing to hold onto and could be the difference between a successful claim and a frustrating denial. Worth knowing whether you carry the Amex Platinum, the Gold, or any other card with travel insurance benefits.
🚨 Deal Alert: Avianca LifeMiles 130% Bonus Expires Tonight
The Avianca LifeMiles 130% purchase bonus expires today - this is the highest bonus they run, and it won't be back for months.
Miles & Points Daily
This one is time-sensitive: Avianca's LifeMiles program is offering a 130% bonus on purchased miles, and it expires tonight. That is one of the highest buy-miles bonuses running anywhere right now, and LifeMiles are genuinely useful - they book Star Alliance partners including United, Lufthansa, and Singapore Airlines, often without fuel surcharges.
If you have a Star Alliance redemption in mind - particularly on a carrier where partner award pricing is favorable - stocking up on LifeMiles at a 130% bonus makes real mathematical sense. After tonight, this window closes.

💰 Transfer Bonuses Worth Acting On This Week
Two transfer bonuses are closing in the next six days and both deserve a look before the weekend is over.
The Chase Ultimate Rewards to IHG 100% transfer bonus ends this Thursday, July 30. That is effectively doubling your Chase points into IHG Rewards - useful if you have a stay at an IHG property coming up or want to bank points toward a cash-and-points redemption.
The Amex Membership Rewards to Virgin Atlantic 30% bonus runs through Friday, July 31. Virgin Atlantic Flying Club is one of the best ways to book Delta One business class at a fraction of what Delta charges in SkyMiles. The 30% top-up makes the math even more compelling. Our Virgin Atlantic Points Calculator can help you figure out exactly how far your points go.
For the full list of every live transfer bonus right now, our transfer bonuses tracker has them all in one place. Friday Flight Deals is also worth a check this week if you are still deciding between a cash fare and an award redemption on any of these routes.
🌎 Trivia Reveal
The answer: Southwest Airlines launched with just 3 routes in 1971 - the Texas Triangle connecting Dallas Love Field, Houston Hobby, and San Antonio. From those three cities, they've grown to hundreds of destinations and are now launching reverse red-eyes. Not bad for a regional carrier that almost didn't survive its first year.
💬 Quick Question
The Chase Sapphire Preferred's 100K offer is one of the most-discussed cards in this newsletter's history. I'm curious - are you already holding the Sapphire Preferred, or is this the kind of offer that would finally push you to apply? Hit reply and let me know - I read every single response, and the breakdown of where readers stand on Chase cards always surprises me.
That Lufthansa Back Seat story is going to stick with me. Airlines have been creative with premium upsells for years, but charging extra to sit further back is a genuinely new frontier. I'll be watching how this lands with actual passengers.
Have a great Friday.
