Citi Just Added Japan Airlines - And a 30% Bonus Drops Europe Business Class to 66,000 Points

There are days when a transfer partner announcement lands and it's basically a shrug. Then there are days when the math actually changes - and today is one of those days.

Japan Airlines Mileage Bank has been on a partnership spree over the last 18 months. Which of the following US transferable points programs added JAL BEFORE today's Citi announcement?

Citi ThankYou just added Japan Airlines Mileage Bank as a new 1:1 transfer partner, effective immediately. To celebrate the launch, there's a 30% transfer bonus running through October 24 - meaning every 1,000 Citi points becomes 1,300 JAL miles during this window.

Here's why that number matters: Japan Airlines charges 85,000 miles for Emirates business class round-trip to Europe. At a 30% bonus, you only need to transfer 66,000 Citi ThankYou points to cover that. View from the Wing did the math, and it checks out - though you'll need roughly $250 in taxes and fees on top, and award seats do need to be available.

JAL has been aggressively building US transfer partnerships. As Frequent Miler noted when covering this launch, JAL has joined Bilt, Capital One, and Rove over the last 18 months - so Citi was always going to follow. The question was when. Capital One has its own 30% JAL bonus live right now through September 30, so if you hold miles in multiple currencies, this is a stacking moment worth paying attention to.

The 30% bonus runs through October 24, giving you just over a month. If you have Citi ThankYou points sitting idle and have been eyeing a business class redemption to Europe or Asia, this is the most actionable window the Citi program has offered in a while. Don't transfer speculatively - confirm space first, then move points.

Alongside the JAL news, Citi quietly launched a 25% transfer bonus to Avianca LifeMiles, also running through October 24. The standard 1:1 ratio becomes 1:1.25 during this window.

LifeMiles is a niche program, but it has real value in specific situations - particularly for Star Alliance redemptions where other programs overprice or add fuel surcharges. The 25% bonus makes those redemptions cheaper to reach. That said, JAL's 30% bonus is stronger math if you have a specific award in mind, so prioritize based on your destination.

This one is less exciting but more important to know. Citi has quietly updated the bonus eligibility terms for its Strata card lineup. Previously, you could earn a welcome bonus on each Strata card once every 48 months. The language now reads as a one-time lifetime bonus - meaning once you've earned it, you won't earn it again on that card, ever.

The shift follows a pattern we've seen at other issuers tightening up their bonus rules. It's worth noting that enforcement details are still being worked out, and real-world data points will emerge over the coming weeks. But if you've been sitting on the fence about applying for a Citi Strata card, the calculus has changed - waiting now has a real cost.

View from the Wing broke down the Citi Strata Elite specifically: the current offer combines 75,000 points with up to $1,200 in travel credits in your first year. Those points can now transfer directly to American Airlines AAdvantage, which adds a genuinely useful redemption path for domestic and partner awards.

If you've earned a Citi Strata bonus before, check your records carefully before applying again. If you haven't, and the card fits your spending, the window to earn the welcome bonus for the first (and possibly only) time is now. Don't let the lifetime rule catch you off guard.

A quick but important flag on the Amex side: the 30% transfer bonus to British Airways Avios, Iberia Avios, and Aer Lingus Avios all expire this Sunday, September 27. That's six days from now - not a lot of runway if you're planning a redemption that requires Avios.

The BA Avios in particular unlock some strong short-haul redemptions in Europe, and the Iberia bonus is historically one of the better ways to book premium long-haul at favorable rates.

A few buy-points deals worth flagging before they close. Aeroplan is running an 85% purchase bonus that expires this Friday, September 25 - that's four days from now. If you have an Air Canada redemption lined up and you're short on miles, this is a strong top-up moment.

JetBlue is offering a 120% bonus on purchased TrueBlue points through October 1. At that multiplier, the per-point cost drops significantly - useful if you're eyeing a Mint redemption and need to bridge a gap. All of these are tracked with current pricing on our buy points page.

The answer is Bilt Rewards. JAL joined Bilt first, followed by Capital One and Rove, before today's Citi announcement. Chase Ultimate Rewards and Amex Membership Rewards do not currently transfer to Japan Airlines. (Chase does have a 20% Aeroplan bonus running right now through September 30 if you're looking for another Chase transfer option.)
