Google Just Started Showing Award Prices in Search
Two airline programs, three hotel chains, and one very obvious gap. Plus the 30% Avios bonus that turns Qsuite into 54,000 Amex points.

Alaska. American. Hilton. Wyndham. Choice. That is the launch list for the biggest shift in award searching in years, and it did not come from an airline, a blogger or a scrappy startup. Google switched it on today.
You can now ask Search, in a plain sentence, how many miles a flight costs. No award chart. No airline login. No third-party tool. I have been chewing on this all afternoon, because I think it is simultaneously bigger and smaller than the reaction suggests.
🤓 Miles & Points Trivia
Which airline loyalty program launched alongside American AAdvantage in Google's new points and miles search?
🇺🇸 Delta SkyMiles
🇺🇸 United MileagePlus
🇺🇸 Alaska Atmos Rewards
🇺🇸 Southwest Rapid Rewards
The answer is chillin' near the bottom of today's newsletter... keep scrolling.👇
🔍 Google Now Answers "How Many Miles Is This Flight?"
Here is Google's own example prompt: "I want to travel from Atlanta to Miami using my AA miles. Help me find some options for nonstop flights departing Oct 9 and returning on Oct 12." AI Mode comes back with matching flights and what they cost in miles, using data supplied directly by the participating programs. You then click through to the airline or hotel to actually book.
Who Is In on Day One
Flights launch with Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines (now Atmos Rewards) plus American AAdvantage. Hotels launch with Hilton, Wyndham and Choice. Google says Accor, Air France-KLM Flying Blue, Hyatt, LATAM and Lufthansa Group are coming in the following weeks. The points and miles view is available globally.
Two other things shipped at the same time. Google Flights price tracking now lives inside AI Mode, covering more than 300 partner airlines and booking sites, live in over 180 countries. And you can now complete a hotel booking without leaving Google at all.
Alaska, American, Choice, Hilton and Wyndham at launch. Delta, United, Southwest, JetBlue, Marriott and IHG are all absent.
The launch list tells you a lot
🕳️ The Gap Nobody Is Talking About
Here is my honest read, and it is not the one you will see elsewhere today.
The hard part of award travel was never "what does this flight cost in AAdvantage miles." American's own website answers that in about eleven seconds. The hard part is the question underneath it: which of my six balances books this exact seat for the fewest points, and is there a transfer bonus running right now that changes the answer?
Name One Program, Get One Answer
Google's version asks you to name a program and fix your dates. That is a single-lane search. It will not tell you that the same Qatar Airways seat prices differently through Avios than through AAdvantage, and it will not flag that Amex is currently paying 30% more Avios than usual. That cross-program comparison is exactly what Award Travel Finder was built to do, and it is why our Award vs Cash Calculator still earns its keep. Sometimes the right answer is to ignore the miles entirely and pay cash, which is the whole premise of Friday Flight Deals.
So why do I still think this matters? Because of who is searching. Until today, finding out that a saver award seat existed required you to already know that saver award seats exist. Now the question gets answered for anyone who types a sentence into the box they already use every day. That is a very large number of new people looking at the same finite pile of award inventory.
My guess: the easy routes get harder first. Domestic nonstops, obvious leisure markets, school holiday weeks. The obscure partner sweet spots that need three tabs and a distance chart will stay quiet for a while yet. If you have a trip in mind for the next six months, I would stop waiting for a better week to book it.
🏨 Booking a Hotel Without Leaving the Search Box
The third piece is the one that made me sit up. Describe the trip, get hotel options with reviews, then hit "Continue on Google," pick a room, check the cancellation terms, and pay through Google Pay. It is live in the US in English with Booking.com, Choice, Expedia, Hilton, Hotels.com, IHG, Marriott, Priceline, Trip.com and Wyndham.
Read the Merchant of Record Line
Google is clear that the hotel or booking platform is the merchant of record and handles customer service. That single sentence carries real weight for anyone who cares about elite status. A stay booked through a third-party channel does not always behave like a stay booked direct when it comes to points earning, elite night credit and upgrades. If your Hilton Honors or Bonvoy status is doing work for you, check which channel the booking actually lands in before you tap pay.
🚨 Deal Alert: 30% to Avios Until September 27
Since Google's tool will not surface this for you, here it is. American Express is running a 30% transfer bonus to British Airways, Iberia and Aer Lingus Avios through September 27. That turns the usual 1:1 into 1:1.3, so 1,000 Membership Rewards points become 1,300 Avios.
Qsuite for 54,000 Amex Points
Avios sit inside one shared pool, so once they land at BA, Iberia or Aer Lingus you can move them across to Qatar Airways Privilege Club at 1:1. Qatar prices long-haul Qsuite business class from 70,000 Avios each way. Run that backward through the bonus and you are looking at roughly 54,000 Amex points for one of the best business class seats flying. That is a genuinely silly number.
Before you move anything, price the exact route with our Qatar Airways Avios Award Flight Finder, and if you are short of the total, the Avios Balance Booster calculator over at Smart With Points works out whether topping up via BA, Qatar or Finnair is cheapest. Transfers are one-way, so confirm the seat first.
⏳ Three Bonuses Expire Inside Five Days
Speaking of things Google will not warn you about, the calendar is brutal this week.
First, the 10% bonus to Cathay Pacific Asia Miles ends tomorrow, August 28. It runs from Amex, Bilt, Brex, Capital One, Citi and Wells Fargo, plus a long list of hotel programs including Hilton Honors, World of Hyatt and IHG One Rewards. Registration is required and the bonus caps at 10,000 miles, so this is a topping-up play rather than a headline one.
Second, Chase to IHG One Rewards is running at 70% through August 31, an elevated 1:1.7. I want to be straight with you here: this looks enormous and mostly is not. IHG prices dynamically, and Ultimate Rewards points are worth considerably more than IHG points even after a 70% boost. Run your specific stay through the Points & Miles Value Calculator before you press the button. If the answer is not comfortably above average, keep the Chase points.
Third, Citi to Turkish Miles&Smiles is at 40% through August 31. Two catches worth knowing. Turkish applies the bonus after the fact rather than Citi showing it at transfer, and the bonus caps at 50,000 miles, which means transferring 125,000 ThankYou points to max it out.
A 70% transfer bonus into a weak currency is still a worse deal than no bonus into a strong one. The percentage is marketing. The cents per point is the answer.
My hill, and I will die on it
If none of those suit, Chase to Air Canada Aeroplan is at 20% through September 30, rising to 30% if you hold an Aeroplan co-branded card. That is the calmer option with the longer runway. Everything we track sits on the transfer bonuses tracker, updated as offers land.
🌎 Trivia Reveal
The answer is Alaska Atmos Rewards, the combined Alaska and Hawaiian program. It launched alongside American AAdvantage. Delta, United and Southwest were all absent from the launch list, which is a slightly awkward look for the three largest US carriers on the day Google made award pricing searchable by everyone.
💬 Quick Question
Would you actually book an award flight through a search box, or do you still want to see it on the airline's own site before you commit? Hit reply and tell me. I read every response, and this one I am genuinely curious about.
That's it for today, my friends. See you tomorrow.
