Qatar Just Cut Avios Award Prices 25% - And Amex Cardholders Can Stack a Second Discount On Top

15,000 Amex points for a business class seat. That is not a typo, and it is not a mistake fare either - it is what happens when two separate promotions land on top of each other and nobody at either company seems to have noticed.

Qatar Airways has quietly added something to Privilege Club that Avios collectors have wanted for years: a published, recurring discount on award flights. The airline's new Redemption discount page is live now with up to 25% off Avios pricing on selected routes, and a fresh list promised every month. Our UK sister publication Smart With Points broke down the offer from a British angle yesterday, but the math changes considerably once you add the American piece.

Because right now, US Membership Rewards holders have a 30% transfer bonus to Avios running at the same time. One promotion cuts what you spend. The other cuts what those points cost you to acquire. Stack them and the numbers get genuinely silly.

What Qatar Has Actually Launched

This is Qatar's answer to Flying Blue Promo Rewards and KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes - a rotating set of routes where the airline knocks Avios off the standard award price to move seats that would otherwise fly empty.

Straight from Qatar's published terms, here is how it works. Bookings must be made by August 14, 2026, for travel between August 5 and September 30, 2026. Only flights marketed and operated by Qatar Airways qualify, so no oneworld or partner metal. Economy and Business are on this month's list, and Flexi Awards are excluded. You have to be logged into your Privilege Club account on qatarairways.com or the app, because these prices will not show up through British Airways.

The good news on mechanics: discounted fares are tagged automatically in the Award Flight Finder, so there is no promo code to hunt for. Qatar sets no limit on how many discounted awards you book, and allows up to nine passengers per booking.

This Month's Routes and Prices

Everything runs to or from Doha. Prices below are one-way off-peak - peak dates get discounted too, just from a higher starting point.

Colombo in business for 26,250 Avios is the one that made me sit up. Sri Lanka is a legitimate destination in its own right and a sensible jumping-off point for the Maldives, and 26,250 points for a five-hour premium cabin hop is a strong number before you apply anything else.

Where the Amex 30% Bonus Comes In

Here is the part that matters for us. Between August 3 and September 27, 2026, the US Membership Rewards program is offering a 30% bonus on transfers to British Airways Club, Iberia Plus and Aer Lingus AerClub. Points normally move at 1:1, so during the promotion 1,000 Membership Rewards points become 1,300 Avios.

Amex does not transfer directly to Qatar Privilege Club, and that trips people up. The bonused route is Amex to British Airways, Iberia or Aer Lingus first, then move the Avios across to Privilege Club - which is free, instant and 1:1, because all these programs share the same currency. You get the bonus on the way in and spend the discounted rate on the way out.

Worth being precise about one thing, since it is the whole premise here. Qatar's terms say Redemption Discount flights cannot be combined with other Avios offers or promotions. A credit card transfer bonus is not that. It changes what the Avios cost you before they ever land in your account, and the discount changes how many you then spend. Two different stages of the same trip.

What These Seats Cost in Amex Points

Membership Rewards transfers in increments of 1,000, so the figures below are rounded up to the nearest transferable block. A couple of them land almost perfectly.

Doha to Cairo in business for exactly 15,000 Membership Rewards points is the standout - 15,000 multiplied by 1.3 is 19,500 Avios, which is the discounted fare to the point. Berlin or Warsaw in business for 25,000 Amex points is arguably the better trip, though. Without either promotion that seat costs 43,000 Avios, so you are looking at roughly 42% fewer points for the same flat bed.

The Catch for US Collectors

Now the part I have been holding back. There is not a single American city on that list. No New York, no Chicago, no Los Angeles - and nothing anywhere in the Americas. Qatar serves twelve US gateways, from Atlanta and Boston through to Seattle and Washington Dulles, and none of them are discounted this month.

So this is not a "fly from JFK for less" deal. What it actually is, for us, is a discount on the back half of a trip you were probably already routing through Doha.

Every Qatar long-haul from America connects at Hamad, and a standard US to Doha business award runs around 70,000 Avios one-way. The onward leg is where this bites. Fly to Doha at the normal rate and continue to Colombo at 26,250 rather than 35,000, and you have shaved 8,750 Avios off a trip you were taking anyway. Do the same to Jakarta and you save 15,000. That is not a headline, but it is real money on a routing that already made sense.

There is also a reported pricing quirk doing the rounds, and I want to be careful here. Qatar's own terms state plainly that the reduced rate applies only to flights tagged as Redemption Discount, and that everything else in the same booking prices at standard award rates. Several points sites have independently run test bookings this week suggesting that when an itinerary starts or ends in a promotional city, the discount appears to carry across the whole journey. If that held for a US routing, the numbers would be dramatic.

I would not plan around it. Behavior that flatly contradicts an airline's published terms is either an undocumented design choice or a pricing bug, and nobody writing about this knows which. Nor have I seen it tested from a US departure point specifically. Book what you would be happy to have booked at the price you actually paid, not what you are hoping survives to departure.

The Fine Print Worth Reading Twice

First, and this is the one that will stop a lot of Americans dead: since late June, Qatar only lets you redeem Avios for anyone other than yourself if you have credited at least one paid flight to your Privilege Club account. We covered that rule change when it landed, and it is not something you can fix inside a seven-day booking window. If you have never credited a flight to Privilege Club and you want to book for a partner, sort it now rather than when the September list drops. Any oneworld ticket counts.

Second, you earn nothing on these tickets. Qatar's terms state that Avios cannot be earned on Redemption Discount flights - not a dealbreaker on an award ticket, but worth registering if you were counting on Qpoints.

Third, the cash side still applies. Taxes, duties, surcharges and service fees are all payable at booking, and Qatar adds an award booking fee that varies with distance and cabin. Check the fare breakdown before you get excited about the Avios number.

Fourth, availability is genuinely limited and first come, first served. A city appearing on the list does not mean seats exist on your dates. And if you later change to a date that is not a discounted option, the whole booking reprices at the standard award rate.

Finally, a practical one about the transfer itself. Amex to British Airways is usually fast but not contractually instant, and transfers are irreversible. Find the seat first, then move the points - never the other way around. Because Avios move freely between British Airways, Qatar, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Finnair and Vueling at 1:1 with no fee, you do not need to earn them with Qatar specifically. Anything that gets you Avios works.

The strongest lever right now is an Amex welcome bonus, transferred across at the 30% rate before September 27. Chase Ultimate Rewards also transfers to British Airways, Iberia and Aer Lingus at 1:1 if that is where your balance sits, though without a bonus attached at the moment.

My Take

I like this more than I expected to. Avios programs have historically been terrible at discounting - devaluations arrive with a press release and improvements arrive never - so a published, recurring, no-code-required discount is a genuine shift in behavior from Privilege Club. Flying Blue and KrisFlyer members have had this for years and it makes those currencies more enjoyable to hold.

But I am tempering the enthusiasm, because the honest read for an American collector is that this month's list is thin. Ten cities, none of them here, and a seven-day booking window with travel finishing September 30. That rewards people with flexible dates in early fall, which is not most of us with jobs and school runs to work around.

The real story is not this month's list at all - it is that there will be another one in September, and another after that. And here is the timing that interests me: the Amex bonus runs through September 27, which means it will still be live when the next list drops. If Qatar ever puts a US gateway on that list while a 30% Avios bonus is running, that becomes a seriously significant offer rather than an interesting curiosity.

So my advice is unglamorous. If a discounted route happens to line up with somewhere you were already going, book it and enjoy the saving. If it does not, do not contort your travel plans around a promotion that resets in a few weeks anyway. Resist the urge to transfer points speculatively just because there is a bonus - you have until September 27, and by then you will have seen the September route list too. That is a much better position to make the decision from.
