American Express has added The Leading Hotels of the World's Leaders Club as a Membership Rewards transfer partner - effective immediately. That means your Amex points can now unlock stays at over 425 independent luxury properties across 80+ countries, including some of the most iconic hotels on earth.

The headline number being thrown around is roughly 2 cents per point in value - which sounds attractive until you look at the transfer ratio. Amex moves at 4:1, meaning it costs 4 Membership Rewards points to earn 1 Leaders Club point. To get real value here, you need to be booking properties where the cash rate is high enough to justify burning four times as many points as you would with a 1:1 partner like Marriott or Hilton.

The Ritz Paris, for example, regularly runs $1,500+ per night in cash. If you can find a Leaders Club award rate that pencils out to 2 cents per Amex point, that's a legitimate win. But the trap - and there is one - is that not every property in the portfolio offers the same value. Some LHW properties sit in the $300-400/night range, and at a 4:1 drain on your Amex balance, you'd be far better off transferring to a hotel program with a 1:1 ratio.

The bottom line: this transfer partner is worth using selectively, at the high end of the LHW portfolio. If you're dreaming of a specific iconic property and the cash rate is eye-watering, run the math before you transfer. For everything else, your Amex points stretch further elsewhere.

From a miles and points perspective, this is worth watching carefully. Award redemptions in premium cabins have historically come with full fare benefits. If Air Canada starts routing some award bookings through 'Basic' fare buckets - or if partner programs start pricing Aeroplan awards at the Basic rate - you could find yourself sitting in business class but losing status miles, upgrades, or lounge access in the process.
